“Bee? Stop.”

SyBilla blinked and looked over at Caiphus. He had set up shop on the sofa across from the bed in the room she’d been taken to have her injuries treated.

“I wasn’t doing anything,” her tone was quietly argumentative.

Caiphus didn’t bother looking up from the text he was sending from his mobile. “I can almost hear you replaying all the ways you think this was your fault,” he said.

“Lamont would’ve been gone if I hadn’t shown up,” her tone was unchanged.

“Mmm hmm,” Caiphus still worked at his phone, “and there you would’ve been knocking on his door non-stop, thinking he was in the house hiding from you and all the while that goddamn bomb is ticking down with you getting the brunt of the blast. He saved your life.”

The reality of that final sentence drew Caiphus’ attention from his phone. He clenched the device tighter when he realized how badly his hand shook. Silently, he gave thanks that the woman he loved rested in the bed a few feet away and not in the morgue with Lamont Pevsner.

Bill’s sigh pulled his focus back to the present and he left the sofa to join her on the bed. “I can’t afford for you to lose your mind on me, Bee,” he said, lowering his head a fraction to peer more directly into her face. “Do you hear me? Buck up or there will be a spot on the unemployment line with your name on it.”

SyBilla smiled then, knowing his threat was intended to illicit the gesture.

“Good girl,” a moment later he was studying Bill in the gown the nurses had changed her into when they tended her injuries.

“Pamma will be here soon with a change of clothes,” he told her.

SyBilla took a moment to reevaluate her attire as well. “I must look a mess.”

“True words,” Caiphus teased, receiving a punch to the arm for his trouble.

“I’m sorry I didn’t remember to grab my spy apparel from the car when I got on the chopper with Lamont,” she chided.

The reference to their fallen colleague sobered the slight lifting of their spirits. Caiphus took pity when he saw Bill’s lower lip tremble. His emotions then were raw as well.

“Shh…” he urged, not expecting her to take any heed.

SyBilla was in the midst of full blown sobs by the time his hand had tightened on her nape to tug her face into the base of his throat. Caiphus rocked her while they dwelled in sorrow for a time.

“Bee? You said Lamont came to the door with his bags packed?”

SyBilla didn’t immediately respond. Eventually, she eased back from Caiphus to pin him with a curious look before she nodded.

“Why?” he asked.

More curious, Bill could only shake her head as confusion intervened. That confusion latched on to the sorrow still coursing through her so vigorously.

“I uh-I accused him of going to Evangela,” she recalled, “I accused him of so much…”

“Focus Bee,” Caiphus cupped her slender neck in his hand and barely squeezed. “Why was he packed?”

“I...Caiphus
